About The Refractories Institute (TRI)

The Refractories Institute or TRI is a trade association established in 1951 to promote the interests of the refractories industry. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, The Refractories Institute has been promoting the interests of the refractories community including refractory industry by providing support and services to manufacturers of refractory materials and products and suppliers of raw materials, equipment. The Refractories Institute offers three categories of membership. The Refractories Institute has three different publications:

2012 Scholarship Programme

The member companies of The Refractories Institute established a scholarship scheme for the academic year 2012-2013 to support qualified students enrolled in degree programs who have expressed interest in the manufacture of refractories, with course work or other activities, and considering a career in the refractory education and then in the refractories industry. The Refractories Institute (TRI) will award a limited number of scholarships on certain criterion:

• Merit
• Experience demonstrated by the applicant in the field of refractories.

The scholarships will be awarded in the form of one time grants of $5,000 each, based on the review of applications and the judgment of the TRI Scholarship Committee and Board of Directors. Previous recipients of the TRI scholarships are not eligible for further consideration.

Who can apply for TRI Scholarship?

The Refractories Institute scholarships are provided to undergraduate or graduate students studying in North America who intend to be enrolled for full time education in the 2012-13 academic year in pursuit of an undergraduate or advanced degree education in ceramic engineering, materials science or a similar discipline. In order to apply for this scholarship a candidate has to submit a letter of application by the deadline below with details such as –

• A resume mentioning mailing address, phone, e-mail, past academic records, anticipated date of graduation, part-time or summer employment, awards and recognitions, and extra curricular activities etc.

• A letter describing the applicant’s interest in the field of refractories, including courses taken, papers written, research projects, summer or part-time employment, co-ops or work study programs, and any other information that might inform the Scholarship Committee’s deliberations.
• A letter of recommendation from one of the following: department chairman, faculty advisor, or a professor familiar with the candidate’s academic experience and achievements, and confirming the applicant’s interest in refractories.
• A certified copy of the applicant’s academic transcript.
