Indian Refractory Industry in 2010: A Chronology of its Development and Opportunities in Hand

The Indian Refractory Industry would be experienced by more than one and half century within a next few years. The main strength of the refractory industry in India has been its ability to make cost-effective, good quality refractories by virtue of its inherent strengths. The tables here illustrates the performance of Indian Refractory makers vis-a-vis the imports in the recent times and a chronology of development of refractory industry in India. At present with a little more than 2 million tonnes refractory production per annum Indian refractory industry stands as the 7th largest producer of refractories in the world which contributes to about 8% of the global refractory production. Nevertheless, almost 25% of the refractory demands and consumption by Indian industries are met by imports and this itself is an indication of a huge opportunity lying ahead of refractory industry in India to grow through import substitution as well as penetration in the global market. Alkali Resistance (AR) Test of Refractory Bricks and Castables

Refractory bricks, castables or mortars are susceptible to alkali attacks. These alkalis (Na2O and K2O) are highly damaging to refractories, and can reach them either in liquids or in gases. The resistance of Zircon and Zirconia refractories to their attack (at glass-making temperatures) comes mainly from the non-wettability quality of these compositions with respect to alkalis. We have also seen that carbon resists wetting by silicate slags, and graphite is also resistant to wetting by many liquid metals as well as by slags and fluxes. How to test Alkali Resistance (AR) character of refractory bricks and castables.

Beach Sand Deposits in India: A Potential Source of Heavy Minerals Including Some Used as Raw Materials in Refractory, Ferro-Alloys and Glass Industries

The beach sand mineral industry in India dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Indian beach-line along Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa where significant deposits of different minerals are available from beach sands, made this country one of the leading producers of heavy minerals in the world. The beach sand minerals constitute a group of important economic minerals such as - Ilmanite (FeO.TiO2), Rutile (TiO2), Monazite (Ce,La,Y,Th)PO4, Garnet, Sillimanite (Al2O3.SiO2) and Zircon (ZrO2.SiO2). Indian beach-line where significant deposits of these minerals occur in varying size, concentration and grade ranging from 5% to 45%. The exploitation of beach sand minerals and processing were earlier restricted to only Public sector Undertakings mainly by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IRE), which was set up by the Atomic Energy Commission with four divisions comprising Rare Earths Division at Alwaye, Minerals Division at Quilon, Thorium Division at Trombay and Orissa Sand Complex (OSCOM) at Matikhal near Chatarpur. There are other things which make mining of heavy minerals from Indian beach sand deposits favourable such as -

How to stop Black Core formation in Fire Clay Refractory Bricks

Black Cores are black spots formed around the core or middle portion in non-basic fireclay based refractory bricks possibly,  because of the presence of high percentage of raw clay also, containing carbonaceous matters and too much reducing atmosphere in the kiln during firing of these refractory bricks.
